Fun is not fun anymore

It seems that we have been taking for granted that games are supposed to be fun. It is also common that people who are interesting in understanding games usually wonder what is fun and how to define it. But I am not sure that games are about fun. Sure, the experience should be fun but I see it more as a consequence than a goal. Games should be both interesting and challenging.

You could play, say, a very difficult game of chess and do not have fun in the traditional sense but rather enjoy the challenge. This apparent contradiction is similar to the one that happens with horror stories. By definition, fear is not pleasant, however we do “enjoy” horror films. Reading a dramatic story may not be fun, but it is a rewarding experience. I believe that with games the situation is –or should be-similar. It is not that important that the player has fun, but rather that she has an interesting, challenging experience. Fun is secondary.

How white is your avatar?

Henry Jenkins makes a good point about race and cyberspace. It is not explicitely about Massively Multiplayer games, but you can connect the dots.

IF Theory book

"if theory" is not yet available, but you can take a look at its site and at its list of articles. It looks like a very ambitious project on interactive fiction theory.

Institute for children's literature and media

This project from Switzerland analyzes digital media on different platforms (the site is in German). They organized the "Time and Space in Interactive Media for Children" workshop that took place in Zürich on November 23-25, 2001 (you can read Anja Rau's report at Dichtung Digital).

Arteroids

Arteroids is a literary computer game for the web by Jim Andrews. Good classic fun with a literary twist!

More books on Game Design

This one just out: AI Game Programming Wisdom. It contains tons of articles on game AI.

None of these are yet available, but they will be out soon.
"Game Design Perspectives" (or is it "Game Design Methods"?) by François Dominic Laramée.
"Professional Game Design" by Troy Dunniway.

Thumbs up, thumbs down

An interesting article about how videogames produce changes on your fingers (from yesterday's The Observer)

Masaya Matsuura at IWEC2002

Another good reason to fly to Japan this May. IWEC2002's preliminary program is listing Parappa The Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy's designer, Masaya Matsuura, as one of the guest speakers. Gamasutra reports on his recent talk at GDC 2001.

Game Ethics

CNET's News.com reports on GDC's panel discussions.
