New York Times: Political Games

The Gray Lady runs today a feature (free reg. req.) on political and campaign games, featuring most of the current Republican and Democrat campaign games. It has a nice pic of my pal Ian Bogost (and a mini-pic on myself on his monitor) and features both of us, including our games, Ian games and my own newsgames, as well as our own WaterCoolerGames project.
rThe great thing is that it interviews the developers of most of the games in order to get their impressions, which is an extremely valuable resource for research. It is sort of hard to be both a developer and critic, but that did not prevent me from arguing that most of the current GOP games are very poor technically (I even was able to sneak in the term "ludological", probably a first in mainstream media ;)
rLast, but not least, the article anounces Opinions, a game Ian developed for the Democratic National Convention, in which I served as a design advisor. Ian did a terrific job and you will able to judge by yourselves very soon.
rIf anybody out there doubted that play can be serious, well, it doesn't get more serious than a presidential election. Certainly, there is still a LONG way to go for political videogames, but these early days are very exciting indeed.

Travel

Gee, lots of travel in the upcoming back (it was quite quiet this year, excluding of course having to move to Europe). Confirmed: I am attending to the Christian Game Developers Conference in late July. I heard nothing but good things about it from Justin Hall. People using games to convey ideology, you can't miss that. Later on I will stop for a couple of days in Atlanta to visit my pals at Georgia Tech (I hope for their sake that they are all on vacation by then :) I hope to meet with Ian so we can work on some secret project (no, it is not a political game. Actually it is not a game at all). Almost Confirmed: GDC Europe. Unconfirmed but really wanting to: Tokyo Game Show. I had a blast last year with Justin, Robin, Doug and Jane (I witnessed the historical moment when she bought her pink GBA SP). I am a damn bastard, I have been travelling to Japan every year for the last three and I guess this one should not be an exception. Of course, the more immersed in Japanese game culture, the better my research, right?r

Changing Views: Worlds in Play

Grandtextauto just posted that the next Digra conference will be held in 2005 at the Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver, Canada. It will be held on June 17-20, 2005. It's title will be "Changing Views: Worlds in Play". CFP should follow soon at the Digra site. You can read the full press release at Mia Consalvo's blog.

Newsgaming at PC Gamer UK

My MI6 secret sources (thanks Barry!) tell me that there was a short mention to Newsgaming at this month's PC Gamer. If somebody out there has a copy + a scanner, would you be so kind to email me a scan for my records? Thanks in advance.Update:Wow, thanks you all for those scans. That was fast! Thanks again!

Wired on Casual Gaming

Wired has an article on casual gaming and their players. My favorite quote: ""There's no such stuff as female game" (said by Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris).

I think therefore I play

Experiments on mind-controlled games. Who needs gamepads? The procedure right now is experimental and requires having your skull open, so I guess that raises the bar on what we understand by hard-core gamer.

Edinburgh Internation Game Festival

The festival will take place from August 8 until August 22, while the conference will happen on the 12th and 13th. The Edge Magazine award nominees have been anounced. It is an impressive list of games and, as a member of the jury, all I can say is that it may not be easy to find a winner, but surely it will be a lot of fun to try!
